First Suzuki Pickup

Bericht door Offroadrunner » 26 feb 2008 21:58

Rebadged Nissan Frontier is expected to go on sale in the U.S. next year.

April 2007

Suzuki Motor Corporation is getting into the compact pickup market in North America. Its first entry will be introduced in the summer of 2008 as an '09 model, Koichi Suzuki, president of automotive operations for American Suzuki Motor Corp., told CARandDRIVER.com in an interview.

Nissan will build the pickup as part of a pact between the two automakers signed in June 2006. The deal called for Nissan to supply a compact pickup, largely for the North American market, as well as a minivan for Suzuki to sell in Japan. In turn, Suzuki was to produce another minivehicle for Nissan for Japan and a new A-segment car for Europe.

While neither side will say it officially, obviously the new Suzuki pickup will be a rebadged Nissan Frontier (pictured above and in photo gallery), built at the Smyrna, Tennessee, plant.

Which begs the question: Do we need another compact pickup when sales in the segment have fallen off to the point where Ford hasn't found it worthwhile to renew the million-year-old Ranger?

Mr. Suzuki thinks it's worthwhile. He said about 200,000 Americans buy Suzuki motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles a year and he figures about 10 percent of them would be brand loyal enough to buy a pickup to haul their toys.

Many of those buyers could be female. The automaker was surprised last summer with market research that showed how many women customers like Suzuki motorcycles. No stats were available on how many men like women who like both motorcycles and pickups.

One cautionary note: Mitsubishi's decision to launch the Raider pickup as a rebadged Dodge Dakota has not been a success. Bonus points for readers who have ever seen a Raider on the road.
